Gyalshing, 29 July (IPR): District Health Society Gyalshing headed by DRCHO, DPM, HEO and team along with special guest Mr. Bikash Jairu (Star Footballer of Sikkim presently playing as Midfielder from Jamshedpur FC) in the presence of Deputy Director, HRDD, CDPO, Principal and other dignitaries initiated launching of Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign at Darap Senior Secondary School today.
Similarly, the MR vaccination campaign was also launched at Tashiding PHC and Mangalbarey PHC by Medical Officer and team as informed by CMO West, Dr. T. Namgyal.
Gyalshing, 29 July (IPR): The 38th National Arm Wrestling Championship kicked off here at auditorium of Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School, Gyalshing.
The two-daylong championship is organized by All Sikkim Arm Wrestling Association (ASAWA) under the aegis of Arm Wrestling Federation of India (AWFI). It is for the first time that the State of Sikkim is hosting the National level Arm Wrestling Championship.
The inaugural day of the championship was attended by Mr. D.B. Gurung (Chairman, State Bank of Sikkim) as chief guest along with D.C. (West), Mr. Karma R. Bonpo; President of AWFI, Mr. E.R. Shankar Bhagawati; Vice President (AWFI), Mr. Ganesh Subba; President of ASAWA, Mr. Lhendup Dorjee Bhutia; Chief Youth Convener, Mr. Janak Kr. Gurung, and other association dignitaries.
A large numbers of participant from the States of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Kerela and the host State Sikkim are competing against each other in the championship. The championship in various categories of arm wrestling was conducted today.
President, ASAWA, Mr. Lhendup Dorjee Bhutia, expressed that arm wrestling is in nascent stage in Sikkim and there is a need of development of technique and knowledge among the Sikkimese participants about the game. However, he maintained that the ongoing National level championship held in the State could be a turning point for the arm wrestlers of Sikkim who want to know more about the arm wrestling techniques.
“It is good to see the Sikkimese arm wrestlers who are new to arm wrestling giving a tough competition to already established and skilled arm wrestlers from other States. I assume that Sikkim has a bright future in arm wrestling in near future,” he added.
Mr. Bhutia informed that ASAWA is playing an active role to promote and popularize arm wrestling in Sikkim and the objective of organizing the national level arm wrestling championship in Sikkim is part of promoting arm wrestling in Sikkim. ASAWA wants to involve more numbers of youth in arm wrestling through creation of necessary platform for the youth, he added.
President, AWFI, Mr. E.R. Prahlad Sankar Bahagawati, in his brief address appreciated the effort of ASAWA for promotion of arm wrestling in the state of Sikkim. He said popularity of arm wrestling in the world sporting arena is growing up gradually and people of Sikkim are taking up arm wrestling keenly as a beneficial sporting activity.
Describing the future of Sikkim as bright in arm wrestling, Mr. Bhagawati praised the interests shown by the Sikkimese arm wrestlers and the effort being put up by the state for promotion of the sport.
“Popularity of arm wrestling is growing up in Sikkim. We just need involvement of more numbers of youth for development and promotion of arm wrestling in the State,” he said.
He maintained that sporting activities play a constructive role for formation of strong, disciplined and moral society. He maintained that making the youth part of sports based activities for healthy living has become a necessary of the time.
It was reported that the final matches of the championship will be played on Tuesday.
Gangtok, 29 July (IPR): The Doordarshan team from Delhi headquarters called on Chief Secretary, Mr. A.K. Shrivastava, today.
Secretary, Department of IPR, Mrs. Sherap Shenga, and Secretary for Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Miss Namrata Thapa, were present in the meeting along with the team.
The Doordarshan team had the presence of Director General, Ms. Supriya Sahu, Officer on Special Duty, Mr. Srinivasan Sreeram, Assistant Director, DDK Gangtok, Mr. Ashok Kumar, Assistant Engineer, DDK Gangtok, Mr. Hari Gopal Sharma, and Broadcast Executive, Mr. Suman Gazmir.
Chief Secretary, Mr. Shrivastava, welcomed the team by offering khadas. The purpose of their visit was to showcase and collaborate with the Government of Sikkim in an effective way to launch a Doordarshan channel for Sikkim wherein the State Government’s involvement, events that take place regionally and nationally and tourism of Sikkim would be highlighted.
Director General, Ms. Supriya Sahu, showed her concern that the entire North East need to be highlighted in the national media and thus the meeting with Hon’ble Chief Minister and Chief Secretary of Sikkim was to better the concept of effective and engaging coverage.
The CS gave suggestions about various aspects that could be covered by Doordarshan Sikkim Channel like eco-tourism, pilgrimage sites, flora and fauna, local communities and to promote local talents such as beauty pageants, etc., which would place Sikkim in the global map.
He also gave brief introduction and shed light on the importance and significance of Samdrupste, Guru Padmasambhava and Char Dham at Solophok Namchi to the Doordarshan team.
The meeting concluded by gifting of various books on Sikkim by the Secretaries of Department of IPR and Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation.
Gangtok, 29 July (IPR): Director General of Doordarshan, Smt Supriya Sahu, and her team from Delhi called on Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) at his residence today.
The Director General informed the HCM that she is visiting the State to take stock of the situation with regards to the functioning of DDK at Gangtok. She said that the main aim was to make the DDK full functioning with satellite broadcasting and equip it with all the modern technologies.
The HCM thanked the Director General for the kind consideration and requested that Sikkim be connected to the mainstream National media so that the state gets proper coverage. He also stated that the State has lot of unique things to present to the rest of the world through its different culture, traditions, sports which needs to be showcased and thus the functioning of the DKK at Gangtok would be a great step towards achieving the goal.
He also elucidated that recruitment of local people who hold expertise in mass media would motivate the youths to give in their best. In the end, he extended all support possible towards the common goal.
The Director General also informed about the launch ‘Hello Sikkim’ series which will highlight local events and have informative slots.
