A Sensitization & Awareness programme on Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes

Namchi, 5th August (IPR): A District-level Sensitization & Awareness programme on Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, Protection of Civil Rights 1995 and Scholarship Schemes under Social Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim was organized as a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) celebration at School Auditorium, NTL Government Senior Secondary School, Vok today.
The programme had the presence of Zilla Panchayat Ms. Phurmit Lepcha, Vok-Omchu Territorial as Chief Guest along with Panchayat President and members of Vok-Omchu GPU. Ms. Sangita Gurung and Ms. Aeromeena Lepcha were present as Resource Persons from One Stop Centre, Jorethang. The Principal Mr. Roland Subba, NTL Govt. SSS Vok, HM Mr. Pravin Pradhan, CM Rai Govt. SS Omchu, Incharge Mr. Lakpa Sherpa, Govt. SS Pabong, Incharge Mr. KB Thapa, Govt. JHS Chumlok were also present in the programme.
Advocate Ms. Aeromeena Lepcha (Resource Person) highlighted the importance of Protection of Civil Rights 1995 and its salient features. She also shed light on the awareness of the SCs & STs (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989. The Constitutional safeguards every section of SCs & STs communities in the various sector of day-to-day life.
Simultaneously, Ms. Sangita Gurung (Resource Person) spoke about the importance and various functions of safeguarding and services towards girl child and women through One Stop Centre, Jorethang. She also talked about various instances with respect to child trafficking and its ill effect and consequences. In this regard, she urged the gathering to tackle with utmost alertness & vigilant which must begin at the individual level.
On behalf of the Social Welfare Department, Mr. Kyondit Lepcha (WO Namchi) highlighted the various Scholarship schemes under his department. He talked about the scholarships being provided by the Centre and the State respectively. The scholarship schemes like Pre-Matric, Post-Matric, Merit cum Means scholarship by the Centre Government and Pre-Matric & Post-Matric scholarship for STs, SCs, Central OBC, EBC students, National Fellowship scholarship through State Government.
He also added the important responsibilities of Institute level-1 Verification from the assigned Institutional Nodal Officer (INO) for availing such benefits.
He further, highlighted the Centrally sponsored SHRESTA Scholarship scheme for SC girl & boy students for Class IX & XI, admission at Top selected schools of India.
