Online Webinar on the occasion of NSS Day

Gangtok, September 24: On the occasion of National Service Scheme Day, NSS Cell, Department of Sports and Youth Affairs conducted an online webinar with the theme ‘YOUTH EMPOWERMENT’. The programme was graced by Hon’ble Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Department Shri Kunga Nima Lepcha and attended by Secretary, Sports and Youth Affairs Shri Kuber Bhandari, Additional Director, Smt. Doma Tshering, State Nodal Officer, NSS Cell, Smt. Suchitra Rasaily, District NSS Nodal Officers, Programme Coordinators, Programme Officers and the NSS volunteers from Universities, Colleges and Senior Secondary Schools.

The programme began with the welcome address by State Nodal Officer wherein she laid emphasis on the importance of NSS Day, the contributions made by NSS Cell, POs, PCs and Volunteers especially during the pandemic and the importance of youths as change makers in achieving the sustainable development goals and nation building.
Thereafter, Dr Nidhi Saxena, Programme Coordinator and Shri Namgyal Sherpa Programme Officer shared their experiences regarding the activities carried out during the pandemic.
The programme also saw two volunteers namely Miss Reema Gurung, NSS volunteer of Nar Bahadur Bhandari Degree College and Miss Iksha Rai, NSS volunteer of Sikkim University shared their messages regarding the contribution of youth in various sectors in eradicating poverty, raising education standards, acquiring knowledge and skills, maintaining proper mindset, having the determination to set goals and to achieve it.
Secretary, Sports and Youth Affairs Department congratulated the NSS volunteers for working relentlessly during the pandemic and marching ahead instead of all the obstacles. In his address, he also suggested that the NSS Cell hold a webinar for NSS volunteers to disseminate the information regarding the New Education Policy 2020. He also advised the training and involvement of volunteers in disaster management, to increase the strength of volunteers from schools and colleges and provide an opportunity to them for community services, to participate in the Fit India Movement Freedom Run and upload maximum virtual runs in the website www.fitindia.gov.in to showcase the fitness of the state.
Hon’ble Minister Shri Kunga Nima Lepcha in his address highlighted the various works carried out by the NSS volunteers amidst pandemic. He also congratulated the young volunteers for their involvement in various activities even in the prevailing pandemic situation. He also stated that NSS with the aid of the Education Department will enable to add more youths as volunteers to work towards the development and upliftment of the state and the country. He urged the existing NSS members to motivate the volunteers by conducting trips to all institutions. He also highlighted the importance of agriculture and animal husbandry in increasing the GDP of the country. He congratulated the volunteers and also motivated to strive for excellence and to bring laurels for the state and country, by carrying out community service.
The programme concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Ms Babita Chettri, State NSS Coordinator.

Do’s & Dont’s for COVID-19 Waste Management In Home Isolation Cases

Directions have been issued by Central Pollution Control Board to all State Pollution Control Board under Section 5 of Environment (Protection )Act,1986 based on the orders passed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in the matter IA 181745/2019 in the writ Petition (C) 13029/1985 on 30.07.2020 for ensuring effective management on COVID- 19 waste.
Urban Development Department has been directed by State Pollution Control Board to immediately take up education/awareness generation of households regarding segregation of COVID waste generated and proper disposal from those houses where COVID positive patients are in home isolation in the State.

Second day of awareness campaign to educate public on Covid 19

Gyalshing, 23rd Sept.(IPR): The second day of awareness campaign against Covid-19 to prevent the outbreak in the state and making people more aware about the Covid-19 pandemic situation, its prevention and dealing with it as per the Government guidelines, the Information and Public Relations Department (IPR) West Gyalshing, under the guidance of DC West, Karma.R.Banpo successfully completed its day 2 intensive miking.
The vehicle was draped with a banner to popularise preventive practice of Covid-19 like use of masks while going out, maintaining social distancing, frequenting washing of hands with soap and no spitting at public places. The recorded audio on these preventive practices were also played while the vehicle moved around the different places.
The campaign started from Pelling covering Bongten,Dentam ,Kaluk and surrounding area under Soreng subdivision..The drive successfully concluded around 6 PM.

It was also informed in the health bulletin that the State has recorded 1 more COVID-19 death.
A 50 year old male, resident of Rumtek was brought dead to STNM hospital on 22nd September. He had returned to the State on 19th September and was in home isolation. He had developed symptoms and was taken to STNM hospital where he was declared brought dead at around 6:30 pm.
