Coordination-cum-DDMA meet on monsoon preparedness in West Sikkim

Gyalshing, 03 May (IPR): Coordination-cum-District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) meeting on monsoon preparedness was conducted at the Conference Hall of West District Zilla Panchayat Bhawan in Gyalshing.

The meeting was chaired by District Collector, West, Shri. Karma R. Bonpo, along with Sub Divisional Magistrate (Headquarter), Shri. Tushar G. Nikhare, SDM (Gyalshing), Shri. Gilbert Lepcha, and heads of line departments. The meeting was mainly called to access the current situation of various departments on monsoon preparedness.

During the coordination meeting, coordination issues, works being done in the various departments, intervention of the DC office if needed were discussed. Various departments gave their detailed preparedness process.

The DC directed the representatives of different departments to make sure that the concerned department must be prepared for any natural calamities which can take place during the monsoon season. He urged the PMGSY department to make sure that the roads construction and back cutting should not hinder the natural flow of drain waters.

He asked the officials of PMGSY and Roads Department to clear all the drains urgently and take preventive actions. He also asked the SDMs to inspect the roads to avoid natural calamities. Carpeting works not to be done in the rainy seasons to avoid unnecessary government resources.
HRDD was instructed to train the students for coping with the natural disasters along with the availability of First aid kits at schools.

The DCSO was instructed to stock supplies of food grains along with buffer stock for food grains to be kept at Storage facilities where at least three months’ ration should be stocked for far off villages in case of any hindrance of vehicular movement. Relief centers to be designated with rations available for the victims in case of occurrence of natural calamities.

The SSB extended their full cooperate in case of any disasters. Criticalities of various departments were also discussed. The UD&HD were asked to take up the cleaning of drainages at their earliest to avoid the water clogging which can cause problem. Assessment of man power in the district was also taken into account.

The DC further briefed about the Disaster management plan where he mentioned that the details and contacts should be compiled and given to the DC Office. Set up of Control room and communication center was also given priority. All SDMs were asked to use their wireless sets during the monsoons.

All SDMs and BDOs were asked to undertake cleanliness drive in their respective stations to avert any dangers and similar joint inspections by concerned Departments to be done at their earliest. Drainage needs to be maintained to check overflow of waters by the Roads Department and PMGSY Department.

All officials were suggested to be on high alert during the monsoons and stock adequate supplies of essentials in the respective stations. Agriculture and Horticulture Departments were also advised to make affected crops compensation in the presence of Revenue Officials in the concerned areas.
