HCM Shri P S Tamang (Golay) launched Rey Mendu GPU, East Sikkim as a Model Village

Rumtek, September 21: (IPR) Hon’ble Chief Minister Mr. Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) launched Rey Mendu GPU in East Sikkim as a Model Village today. The Chief Minister unveiled the plaque and declared the GPU as a model village.

The idea of Model Village was conceived by Chief Minister Mr. Prem Singh Tamang, and accordingly, one GPU in each district was selected to be developed into a model village. The Government recently launched Poklok Kamrang GPU and Bermoik Chingthang GPU as model villages in South and West districts respectively, while Ringhim Nampatam has been identified as a model village for North district.

The programme had the participation of Education Minister Mr Kunga Nima Lepcha, RDD Minister Mr Sonam Lama, Agriculture, Horticulture & Animal Husbandry Minister Mr. L.N. Sharma, MLA Mr G.T. Dhungel, Heads of Departments, officers and staff of the organizing departments, and local gentry.

The launching program at the GPU was followed by a formal programme at the Institute of Hotel Management at Sajong, Rumtek. The Chief Minister distributed token for various items to the beneficiaries of newly launched model village.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Mr. Prem Singh Tamang congratulated the people of Rey Mendu for being awarded the distinction of a model village. He explained that the Government aims to facilitate the implementation of all state and central schemes in the model village and ensure that the GPU emerges as a developed and self-sufficient village. He urged the panchayats, intellectuals, beneficiaries and people of the GPU to make the most of the opportunities provided by the Government, and set high standards of development for other villages to emulate. He added that the idea of a model village is to ensure that government benefits from all scheme-based departments are distributed evenly to the genuine beneficiaries in a phased manner so that there is drastic improvement in the overall economy of the village.

The Chief Minister shared that the Government is contemplating on developing Martam Rumtek as an alternative township to solve the challenge of huge congestion and saturation of space in Gangtok.

The Chief Minister announced a grant-in-aid of Rs. 74 lakhs to the Institute of Hotel Management, Sajong. He also announced the regularization of service of ten employees who have served sincerely and have completed their tenure. Likewise, he announced Assured Career Progression (ACP) to employees who have served sincerely and are eligible.

Earlier, Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture & Animal Husbandry Mr. L.N. Sharma in his address threw light on the concept of model village and explained how this initiative would bring about a visible transformation in the economy of a village. While highlighting the various programmes and initiatives of the Government, the Minister shared that efforts are being made to provide technical support and encouragement to the villagers. He said that senior officers of all the three departments have been carrying out field visits on a regular basis to provide handholding to the farmers. The Minister added that the Department is also devising means to facilitate marketing of the farmers’ produce. He concluded his address by congratulating the people of Rey Mendu GPU for being selected as a model village and urged them to work earnestly to increase their income manifold.

The programme was also addressed by Secretary Horticulture Mr D.K. Bhandari, Secretary Agriculture Mr Khorlo Bhutia, and Secretary Animal Husbandry Mr. S.B. Subba.
