Gangtok, 13 Jun (IPR): A meeting was held in the chamber of Hon’ble Minister of Human Resource Development Department, Shri Kunga Nima Lepcha, to discuss issues related to Sikkim University on 11 June. The meeting was also attended by Hon’ble MP (Lok Sabha), Shri Indra Hang Subba, ACS (HRDD), Shri G.P. Upadhyaya, and his team along with representatives of the students’ wing.
During the meeting, it was informed that there is an unwritten convention to provide reservation of seats in different Undergraduate and Post Graduate Courses under Sikkim University for up to 60% of the total intake capacity for Sikkimese students.
In this matter, the Vice Chancellor informed that he would take up this matter with the Hon’ble Minister of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India for provision in the Statute which can provide for 60% reservation to the Sikkimese students.
The VC also offered to discuss the matter with the University Grants Commission. It was also decided that the MP (Lok Sabha) would accompany the VC for the same.
In the meeting it was informed that the intake in PG Courses of Sikkim University in extension centre at Nar Bahadur Bhandari Degree College, Tadong was considered inadequate. Thus, a request was made to explore the possibility to increase the number of seats in these PG courses.
With regard to this, it was decided that an inspection team would be sent by SU to access the possibility of increasing the number of seats and all possible support from their end was assured.
It was also informed that there are few courses which after completion have ample employment opportunity available, however, it was mentioned that these courses (Chinese, Hindi, Peace and Conflict Management, Psychology, Anthropology, International Relations, etc) are not being opted by the Sikkimese students.
Therefore, an urgent need for creating awareness among students who have passed out Class XII was felt. For this purpose, it was decided that HRDD would conduct awareness during its counselling session to students during admission time of government college and also during allocation of State quota seats.
At the end, Minister Shri Kunga Nima Lepcha said that this is the first meeting of its kind with Sikkim University and there will be more regular meetings and interactions in the future as well.
