Gangtok, January 31(IPR): A day-long State Level Workshop on Jal Jeevan Mission was conducted here at Manan Kendra, Gangtok, today.
Jal Jeevan Mission is an initiative taken by the Government of India to provide Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) to every rural household by 2024.
The workshop was organised by Rural Development Department, Government of Sikkim in collaboration with stakeholders of the state to share the importance of conservation of water. The main objective of the programme was to disseminate the Government’s water mission scheme to rural governing bodies of Sikkim.
The workshop was attended by Minister for Rural Management & Development, Panchayati Raj & Cooperative and Ecclesiastical, Shri Sonam Lama, Representative from Jal Shakti Mission, Government of India, Shri A. Muralidharan, Principal Secretary, Rural Development Department, Shri C.S. Rao, District Magistrates from all districts, Additional District Collectors (Development), SEs, AEs, JEs, Zilla Adhyaksha from districts, Government officials from various Departments, Panchayats and Zilla Panchayats.
Minister Shri Sonam Lama in his short address hoped that the mission to provide water to every household will be a successful mission. He urged the rural governing bodies to use natural spring water to implement water mission for continuous in their respective areas and requested coordination of all line departments to serve the people of Sikkim.
Shri Muralidaran in his address talked about importance of conserving water due to alarming reports of depletion of water supply in rural areas of India. He stated that it was the vision of Prime Minister, Shri.Narendra Modi in the form of Jal Jeevan Mission to provide sufficient water supply to the rural areas. It was reported that it is the largest water supply mission in the world.
Shri Muralidaran gave a brief note on Trinity programme under the mission to provide infrastructure, sustainability and grey water area. He reminded that the District Magistrate play a big role in the mission as the Chairman of Water Mission in their respective districts. After concluding his speech, he interacted with the stakeholders
During the workshop, the role of Panchayati Raj Institution for Water Mission was also propagated.
